The End is the Beginning is the End.

The staff made a very important decision today and we just had to share this very important news with you. It is very important.

For the past year, Marshall Creative has marked its time with a calendar of Star Wars characters. Some of these were well-known and beloved, like R2-D2 and Lando Calrissian. Others were obscure, but in their own way sorta beloved as well, like Dengar. Others have been Jar-Jar Binks. However, as with all calendars, we are approaching the final pages and needed to come up with a new one. We decided not to simply repeat ourselves with the next edition of the Star Wars calendar, having discovered that you can only see so many variations on Obi-Wan Kenobi before you become disenchanted with the whole enterprise. We did want to maintain, in some way, our pop-geek culture, which could mean any of the following franchises:

  • Star Trek
  • Doctor Who
  • Battlestar Galactica
  • Game of Thrones
  • The Lord of the Rings

Or, of course, outer space in general is big around these parts.

Unfortunately, page-a-day desk calendars were impossible to find for any of these franchises and the space ones all looked like airbrushed awfulness. Trek has plenty of 12-photo wall calendars but we’re deeply disappointed that after over 45 years, including four live-action television series, one animated series, and several movies, that they couldn’t put together 365 photographs into a single, easy-to-market item.

The same goes for you, Doctor Who. You’ve already got nearly two weeks’ worth of Doctors alone.

Sure, the new Battlestar ended a few years ago, but that doesn’t mean we’re not still interested. So Say We All, right?

And yes, we’ll forgive Game of Thrones. The books will eventually have thousands of characters to work with but the series has a lot of extras, and we weren’t interested in weeks of “Lannister Guard” and “Dothraki Bloodrider” with a Jon Snow wedged in between.

So the team today instead decided that our next calendar will be this: The Run For Your Life Doomsday 2012 calendar. Every day, a new theory of how life on this planet may end exactly a year from right now!

You might think this is a gloomy thing to have on our minds each day, and that it could be harmful to our productivity if we think that it’s all going to end up in flames/underwater/invaded by aliens anyway. We’d argue that it reminds us to put as much life and energy into what we’re doing–and we love what we’re doing–because of the possibility of flames and water and alien invaders.

Happy Holidays!
