We started the podcast at PERL’s main office on Belmont in Chicago, on the heels of a conversation I had with my brother in D.C. on the weekend of the Army Ten Miler. We were talking about the upcoming Federal bailout and the collapse of prominent Wall Street investment banks and he mentioned that the general population probably didn’t know, or really think they needed to know, something as simple as What The Fed Actually Does. So we started this ongoing series of interviews. Since its inception, the podcast has become a virtual hub for loan officers to partner with real estate agents, financial planners, appraisers and even closing agents from Chicago Title. It’s a lot of fun to host, mostly because I actually have to learn enough information about the Thing of the Moment to be able to talk about it. Chicago Agent magazine published this article about the podcast, and we’re glad to see it’s gaining some steam. If you own a home, you’ve heard of the Good Faith Estimate and Truth in Lending Form. These are all a part of RESPA. Well, starting January 1st, HUD is rolling out a series of new changes that will greatly affect the mortgage industry in 2010. They’re basically consolidating these forms so that there are “no surprises” at closing tables — and home buyers will have the peace of mind of knowing that fees won’t be able to change from the time they apply to the time they close. Trick is, the lender will eat any costs under unapproved changed circumstances. Interesting. This basically means that if, say, your appraisal fee goes up from the original quote on your Good Faith Estimate, the lender will eat the fee. Dan Fogel, an attorney and mortgage consultant with PERL, explained all of these changes — and if you follow the housing market and changes in our national financial markets, you’ll be hearing more and more about this. Check it out.

PERL President Ken Perlmutter joined me for the 2nd annual year in review on the PERL Mortgage Podcast. Over the past year, the mortgage industry has gone through an ocean’s worth of sea changes from tighter lending guidelines to new government-sponsored homeowner tax breaks to a pretty solid image crisis. Ken’s an innovative business owner, and he knows how to adjust his company to changes in market conditions while staying true to core values. With a new decade around the corner, we’re seeing a number of big and small business owners (some of whom are clients) work to not only “save” current business, but to quickly shore-up resources and mindshare to prepare for a new landscape of business trends and expectations. 2010 will be a year in which more people go back to banks and bigger independent lenders, not because they’re better, but because people tend to trust vaults and multiple offices and big annual volume. I think the name of the game will be reputation, trust, and bedside manners. So often, people get busy in the financial business and forget to pay attention people and to answer questions and to know that the general population doesn’t need to swim in Jargon River. Education always wins in the end. <itunes:summary>PERL President Ken Perlmutter joined me for the 2nd annual year in review on the PERL Mortgage Podcast. Over the past year, the mortgage industry has gone through an ocean's worth of sea changes from tighter lending guidelines to new government-sponsored homeowner tax breaks to a pretty solid image crisis. Ken's an innovative business owner, and he knows how to adjust his company to changes in market conditions while staying true to core values. The entire idea came from a conversation I had with my brother in fall 2009 around the time of the Federal Bailout. We were talking about how complicated the dang thing was, and he suggested doing a podcast breaking down and discussing the components one by one. This time around, I sat down with Bob Bowman, a mortgage consultant with PERL, to talk about the recent extension of the first-time homebuyer tax credit. Bob’s been in the business since 2001, and he just launched a very unique website and blog. Bob’s dad is famed hockey coach Scotty Bowman, and his brother is Hawks GM Stan Bowman — so, as you can imagine, BowmanTeam.com will feature all things mortgages and all things hockey. Enjoy!
