That’s less than what the movie Avatar has grossed in less than a month. I’ve talked to a lot of people who loved Avatar, and an equal number of people who didn’t. But the point is — they saw it. Over a billion dollars worth of ticketed passengers from around the world have seen it, positioning Avatar as the 4th biggest movie in the world, ever. All in less than a month. New Year’s Resolutions and missions statements abound and I have have to hear of a business or marketing plan as solid as this: “Give James Cameron whatever he wants and we will invest in that thing.” Full disclosure, I’m a huge fan of sci-fi and loved Avatar but let’s be honest — the idea of a big James Cameron Hollywood Movie means something — and even though only a few production companies (most of all NewsCorp) have the honor of investing in such an endeavor, I’d like to propose to Hollywood that we create micro-investors in big Hollywood movies, helmed by the lovers of Big Hollywood Movies. Think of the buzz you could create, Hollywood, if you’d allow supergroups of folks who spend a lot of time online to invest at $500 or $1,000 a pop. Not only could you create opportunity and fiscal injection into small businesses and start-up operations, but you’d save on marketing — the word of mouth factor would require that micro investors do some of the talking for you. Is this possible? Has this been done? I’d love to know. I personally try and see anything that costs over $100 million to make, mostly because I respect the lob. It’s like, hey. You have to drive the extra 10 minutes to see the ball of twine. That thing took someone a ton of time, battery power and energy to pull off. And the twine isn’t even CG’d.
